Climate Leaders: Eco-Action Week
Tuesday 16 - Friday 19 July, 2024
 

This is a unique opportunity to learn about the ecology of Epping Forest, get a nationally recognised Carbon Literacy accreditation and develop climate leadership skills. The course is packed with in-depth sustainability knowledge, practical conservation methods and skills for enabling you and others to create positive change.

One night of the course is a residential stay in The Hive camping pods; this includes vegetarian/vegan meals, campfire activities and time to socialise with like-minded peers.

Over the four days you will also hear from people in a variety of green careers and take part in a group project on a real-world climate action challenge.

Location:
Day 1: Waltham Forest Town Hall, Forest Road 
Day 2 and 3: The Hive + overnight residential  
The Hive, Church Road, Loughton, Essex, IG10 4AJ (the group will walk to The Hive from Chingford, luggage will be transported via minibus. Please let us know if you require any accessibility support)  
Day 4: Waltham Forest Town Hall, Forest Road

Young people aged 16-21 years
 
Cost:
For people living / studying in the borough of Waltham Forest - £10 to cover Carbon Literacy certification

For people living / studying outside of the borough of Waltham Forest - £70 towards the cost of the tuition, residential night and Carbon Literacy certification

What the Eco-Action Week covers:
 

  • Carbon Literacy Training – Developed by the Manchester Metropolitan University and The Carbon Literacy Project. Topics include climate change science, carbon footprints, a zero-carbon world, and action you can take. By the end you will receive an accredited certificate showing future schools, universities, and employers you are carbon literate.
  • Leading Change for the Climate – The course leaders and project managers from the council’s Climate Emergency team will support you to design and develop a plan for a realistic climate action intervention. You will strengthen your research and communication skills and gain an in-depth understanding of how to go about making practical and behavioural changes in your community.  
  • Ecology techniques – The climate crisis will continue to alter the ecosystem of habitats across the world. Learn key ecological surveying techniques and skills that are used in careers across the environmental sector for monitoring the state of our natural environment. 
  • Learn from experts in different sectors – Each day will be led by experts from environmental education, conservation, political ecology. There will also be opportunities to learn more about green job options and how to take the next steps in your green career.
