Carbon Literacy for Educators

Research shows even 10 minutes in nature has benefits for children’s mental health and focus, yet children are getting increasingly worried about what they know about the climate and nature crisis.

In response to The DfE Climate Education and Sustainability Strategy (launched April 2022), that includes a target of all schools/colleges having a sustainability lead trained in carbon literacy by 2025, The Hive has developed a 1-day climate literacy and action training course to enable teachers to embed sustainability into their lessons and to turn this anxiety into knowledge and action. Teachers will gain a UN recognised Carbon Literacy certification upon completion.

Upcoming dates:

Visit our Events page to see when we are next delivering a Carbon Literacy for Educators session.

Cost:

£165 per person (including VAT)

Please contact thehive@walthamforest.gov.uk if you are unable to make the payment online and require an invoice instead.

There will also be a charge of £10 per person for the certification. This can be paid using a SumUp machine on the day.

Location:

We deliver our Carbon Literacy courses in-person, either at The Hive or at your venue.

Why in-person? The feedback from participants is that attending this course in-person has been very valuable for the group work, rich discussions and finding out what other providers or schools are doing over lunch with other attendees.

If attending a course at The Hive:

Address: The Hive, Church Road, High Beach, Loughton, Essex, IG10 4AJ.

Limited parking is available, and we encourage car sharing where possible. The Hive is a 40-minute walk through Epping Forest – we can provide a map showing the route if needed.

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day. Please being a packed lunch as there are no facilities within walking distance from The Hive.

This course will be delivered both in a classroom and outdoors so please bring suitable clothing and footwear. We do have some wellies and waterproofs to borrow if needed.

Details:

This course is designed for:

  • Teachers that are going to either take a lead on bringing climate and sustainability into the schools’ curriculum and/or support staff that lead an Eco-Committee or equivalent that are taking pro-active steps to increase the school’s sustainability. It is recommended that two teachers attend from each school to build in sustainability and peer support.
  • Environmental educators who would like to find out about how schools are embedding sustainability into their curriculum and opportunities to support schools.

The day will cover:

  • Deepening understanding about the science of climate change
  • Social justice, well-being and the climate emergency
  • Linking climate and sustainability to subject curriculums
  • Techniques and suggestions for teaching outdoors
  • Opportunities for schools to make a positive change
  • Strategies for communicating about climate change to different audiences
  • Starting a whole school Climate Action Plan (or supporting schools to do so)

Teachers are expected to share the outcomes of the training with their school staff team and will be provided resources to help do this.

Waltham Forest Council were ahead of the curve with the Schools and Colleges Climate Charter and are delighted that there are so many schools in the borough keen to set a high standard in sustainability education and climate action. Please find more details here.
